This 2000 CIA internal article, declassified and approved for release in 2009, recounts the ceremony in which the Agency formally welcomed a piece of its own intelligence lineage into its halls. On May 2, 2000, CIA Executive Director David W. Carey accepted a bronze maquette of Sir William Stephenson — the Canadian-born WWII intelligence figure known by the codename “Intrepid” — on behalf of Director George Tenet and Deputy Director Gordon. Presented by the Intrepid Society of Winnipeg, the statue commemorates a man the CIA credits with helping shape the creation of American centralized intelligence, from his influence on the founding of the OSS through to the CIA itself. The piece traces Stephenson’s wartime honors, the sculptor behind the original larger-than-life statue, and the maquette’s new home in the entryway of the CIA’s New Headquarters Building.
